18 Weeks / 19 Weeks

Here I am...again. 18 weeks pregnant and just starting to document my pregnancy.

*** I am now 19 weeks because of Thanksgiving I never actually wrote this post so here I go again.

This pregnancy has not been a picnic. The first three months were spent being nauseous, tired and generally bedridden. Since about 14 weeks I have been functional, but now I am already experiencing back pain, sciatica and some serious round ligament pain. Not fun.

The great thing is I am almost half way through already and baby boy is growing right on track. We go in for our anatomy scan mid-December and I can't wait to see our little man!

Babymoon in Colorado

The idea of a babymoon is pretty simple: take a trip before you enter your third trimester to spend some quality time with your partner before you become parents. We conveniently had a family wedding to attend this past weekend, just a week before I would enter the "no fly" phase of pregnancy. The wedding was of Matt's cousin Chad Gardner to Elizabeth Toohey. I had met them both two years ago at a family reunion and had a great time, so I knew this was going to be a fun wedding.

We arrived in Denver on the Thursday before the wedding. We spent the day exploring the area and took a particular liking to the city of Boulder. We sat outside at a little Italian trattoria and had lunch before Matt treated me to my first ever prenatal massage. I couldn't have felt more spoiled and I might have to make those massages a regular thing. Once my massage was done, we drove back in to Denver.  Matt had a good buddy from college who we spent the night with before heading on our way to Aspen the next day.

The drive was absolutely gorgeous. The weather was cold and cloudy but we welcomed the break from Charleston's sweltering August heat. On our way to Aspen we stopped in Vail to see another city and grabbed a cup of hot apple cider as we walked around. It was the perfect break from the drive, which all-in-all took about 4 hours from Denver. That night was the rehearsal dinner which was held at a local Mexican restaurant. 100 family and friends piled in to drink margaritas and mingle. It was a great opportunity to socialize with Matt's family, but I was so exhausted by the end! The change in altitude really effected me that first night so Matt took me home around 8:30pm and I crashed.

The wedding in Aspen was everything you would think. Matt's cousin and his fiance were married on the top of Aspen Mountain. We rode the gondola up to the summit (where is was 39 degrees) and were given blankets to keep us warm during the outdoor ceremony. Cold weather aside, the ceremony was absolutely gorgeous and went off without a hitch. The view from the top of the mountain was spectacular and the sun even came out at the end!

After the ceremony we all piled into the lodge that had been rented out as the reception venue. We were greeted by waiters carrying trays of wine and champagne. The cocktail hour was stocked with some of my favorite foods including a to-die for charcuterie and cheese selection, mini tomato soups with grilled cheese, burrata on spoons with roasted red peppers, just to name a few of the options. Considering I can't drink, the food was definitely the highlight for me, although the wine that I tasted was also excellent.

Keeping with the great food, the reception definitely boasted the best wedding food I have ever had.Scratch that, the meal at this wedding was one of the better meals I have had in the past few months anywhere! and that's saying a lot! It started with a burrata and tomato salad with arugula and basil and a light balsamic drizzle. Then there was a choice of entree, but Matt and I shared both options which were a pan-seared halibut and a filet Mignon.

I have always been a hater of cake at weddings and this wedding may have just changed my mind completely. Whether or not that has to do with the fact that sugar is all I have now that I can't drink alcohol, this wedding cake was amazing! First there was a dessert course that had three little mini desserts (a chocolate caramel tart, a chocolate coconut mini cupcake, and a fruity mini cheesecake). After we devoured those, the wedding cake came around (no cake cutting ceremony) and it was red velvet with strawberry jam and a cream cheese frosting. It was to die for!!!

We had such a fantastic time in Colorado and it was so wonderful to be able to get to spend some quality time with my hubby before the baby comes. I think it is important to get away together before your life completely changes, but it sure was nice to come home too.

26 Weeks

This week was a little rough, physically. The closer to the third trimester I get, the more I am starting to feel the affects of my growing body. My back and pelvic pain is at an all-time high. I went to the gym the past two days and after I got home yesterday the pain that was radiating down my legs was almost unbearable. Along with back pain, I have now developed acid reflux. I have never had acid reflux before so it is particularly unpleasant, especially because I love tomatoes and spicy food. Another lovely symptom that has developed this week is trouble sleeping. My enlarged belly is making getting comfortable extremely difficult at night time, and it also happens to be my daughters favorite time to kick me.

Although it sounds like I am doing a lot of complaining here, I am actually really enjoying being pregnant still. I feel so blessed to have this little girl inside of me and I can't believe I am almost in the third trimester! Things are getting into gear for both of our upcoming baby showers and I am planning out my last two months of work. All of a sudden it feels as if we have very little time to get our ducks in a row before our little one arrives. We have also reached the point where we will now be seeing the doctor every two weeks.

We went to the doctor yesterday and she gave me some good tips for my back pain (heating pad, muscle relaxer if necessary, taking it easy with the exercise) and gave me a thumbs up as far as baby's heart rate and growth. She said I was measuring at 25.5 which means baby girl is on the small-ish side, which I don't mind. She is definitely getting bigger and I wouldn't mind a 6lb baby on delivery day lol. My weight gain is starting to become steadier and I have definitely gained the most weight this past month (about 5 pounds). The only concern from the doctor was that I am on the verge of having too low of an iron level, so she just asked me to be mindful of eating high iron foods to keep my levels up.

We leave for a wedding in Aspen on Thursday so today I am cooking the remainder of my delivery meals and hopefully will have time to get primped before we go. I can't wait to show off my bump to my in-laws who haven't seen me since pre-pregnancy. They are so excited for this baby that I'm sure I will be closely monitored this weekend...I anticipate being offered lots of food and being asked if I need to rest constantly. Hopefully my back pain will be manageable enough for me to dance at this over-the-top wedding!

25 Weeks

This has been a stressful week. I was busy with work, we started and completed a huge project, and my niece was in the hospital for 4 days. Everything is fine and little Brooke is back at home, but it gave everyone, myself included, major anxiety for the entire week.

To keep busy, Matt and I embarked on an ENORMOUS home renovation project that was brought about by my extreme nesting. Nesting, like pregnancy brain, is entirely real. For no reason at all, the state of our kitchen and dining room area bothered me and it had to be changed. So we painted, then Matt installed a new backsplash and sink, I decorated and we both took on the biggest headache - refinishing our dining room table. It was a lot of work, but it kept our hands and minds busy and off of Brooke being in the hospital.

Between the home projects and the worry there wasn't much sleep this week and both Matt and I felt like zombies the whole time. My brain actually had a hard time functioning. Thankfully, with the good news of Brooke's discharge from the hospital and a couple of solid nights of sleep, I feel back to myself again.

24 Weeks

This week has been an emotional roller coaster. My hormones are definitely raging, as I have entered a very weepy stage of pregnancy. I have cried three times this week, one of those times I would categorize as hysterical. I freaked out about bills, work, money, and how we are going to be responsible for this tiny new person we're creating together. The crazy part is that work is fine, I'm busy and have recently taken on some new clients and I have a big event booked for the beginning of August...so really, I'm just a nut. I think the knowledge that I am shutting up shop soon has gotten me on edge and I'm worried about juggling being a full-time mom with a full-time entrepreneur.

In actual fact, minus the cry-fests, we actually have a LOT to be excited about in the near future. We are going to Aspen in two weeks for a family members wedding and we are stoked, afew weeks after that is my baby shower and we've almost finished two huge DIY home projects (the nursery, and the kitchen/dining room). I plan on posting about both projects once they're completed because we are really proud of how they're coming along.

Anyway, I'm chalking up my weepy week to hormones and hoping to get a grip in the coming weeks.

How Far Along: 24 weeks, 6 days
How Long To Go: 15 weeks, 1 days
Weight Gain: .4lbs
Total Weight Gain: 4.2lbs
Weight: 124.2lbs
Belly Button: holding on for dear life
Stretch Marks: none
Sleep: tired all the time but hard to get to sleep
Best Moment This Week: Picking our daughters full name. Going out to dinner with my sister and brother-in-law. starting a huge makeover of our kitchen/dining room. Finding out my Glucose Tolerance Test came back negative and I need no further testing for gestational diabetes
Nausea: none
Craving: nothing this week
Miss Anything: wine :-/. With my raging hormones I miss my usual crutch - some lovely wine.
Movement: She is so active that it is starting to keep me from getting comfortable
Gender: girl
Symptoms: emotional, tired, back pain
Wedding Ring: still on
Looking Forward To: Finishing our projects
Maternity Clothes: Loving the pieces I got this week from ASOS and Pinkblush Maternity. The dress from ASOS is a powder blue bodycon dress that I am going to rock the hell out of at this upcoming wedding. The pieces from Pinkblush Maternity fit well, although some of the maxi dresses were too long. I am actually wearing one of the Pinkblush dresses in my picture this week.
Fruit: Ear of Corn (1.5lb, 8.5 inches)
Weird Dreams This Week: I don't remember any particularly interesting dreams from this past week...I'll pay more attention next week

23 Weeks

This week has been a lot going on. It started at the end of last week when I took my Glucose Tolerance Test. This is the test that determines a lot in the next few months of pregnancy. Basically it is a blood test that you take after drinking a syrupy sweet drink and waiting an hour. The blood test after you drink the drink and wait an hour determines how well your blood is filtering sugars to your babies placenta. If your test comes back positive (with levels over 135) you have to then go and do a follow up test that takes 3 hours long! More than being just a pain in the ass, if your first and second test come back positive you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes and are put on a restricted, low-sugar diet and have to regularly monitor your blood sugar with finger pricks. Not my idea of making the last trimester of this pregnancy any more fun!

So, I took the first test on Friday and have been anxiously awaiting results since then. They told me that they would be ready by Monday and yet, I haven't heard a peep from my doctor. I even tried calling but I felt silly leaving a message for such a routine thing. I figure, no news is probably good news.

On another note, my sister and her hubby are back in town this week and brought baby Brooke down for another visit. She is 11 weeks now and looks like a little person. It's crazy how fast they grow! I can't wait for her to meet her new baby cousin and for there to be two crying poop machines at my parents house lol.

These last few weeks Matt and I have been toying with names for our upcoming addition and without letting on to too many people, we have narrowed it down to just a couple combinations of first and middle names. We don't plan on telling anyone the name until we've fully committed to one, but we are also toying with the idea of not telling anyone the final name until she is born. In the mean time Matt's dad and step-mom have been calling her BGP for Baby Girl Pontius, and my family picked up on a silly name Matt made up: Birch Canoe. So...baby girl Pontius, or Birch Canoe will have to do until we are ready to announce a name, which could be within days, or at the hospital.

How Far Along: 23 weeks, 4 days
How Long To Go: 16 weeks, 3 days
Weight Gain: 1.8lbs
Total Weight Gain: 3.8lbs
Weight: 123.8lbs
Belly Button: holding on for dear life
Stretch Marks: none
Sleep: getting better sleep now that i am adjusting to sleeping on my sides
Best Moment This Week: cooking a fancy meal for my sisters 30th birthday. It was fun for me to get to do what I do professionally for my family. I don't think they quite understood what I do until now and they were all very appreciative and complimentary. It gave me warm fuzzies.
Nausea: none
Craving: not really, i just miss my deli from back home in NY
Miss Anything: bagels and lox from Bagels&More in Hartsdale, NY
Movement: she is super active but has been gun shy when I've tried to get my mom or sister to feel her
Gender: girl
Symptoms: My emotions have leveled back out thankfully so I don't feel like an emotional basket case. Haven't noticed any new symptoms except yesterday when I had a near panic attack out of hungry. It hit me out of no where and all of a sudden I was driving and got really sweaty and shaky because I was so hungry. I had already stopped and gotten Matt and I some Pho for dinner but I couldn't make it home! I had to stop and get a grilled chicken wrap from the chick-fil-a drive through and I mauled it like a starving trucker on the road as I drove home.
Wedding Ring: still on
Looking Forward To: getting my glucose tolerance test results (and finding out they were negative)
Maternity Clothes: Had to make a larger scale maternity purchase this week. Thankfully I got an incredible deal at Pinkblushmaternity.com and got several staple pieces for around $150. Maternity clothes are EXPENSIVE and they've got you by the balls because there comes a point where you just HAVE to buy them. It's genius really. I also bought a dress from ASOS.com which has a great maternity line at an affordable price because I have to go to a wedding in August and can't fit in any of my formal attire anymore. Nothing has arrived yet so I'll keep you posted.
Fruit: Papaya (1.4lb, 8 inches) - same general size as last week according to the What to Expect App
Weird Dreams This Week: I had a very sexual dream about Kiefer Sutherland the other night. We made passionate, movie-style sex and then were smoking cigarettes in bed and talking about how Freddie Prince Jr was trashing him on the radio. Kiefer was not pleased about Freddie's remarks. (BTW...I do not find Kiefer Sutherland attractive, he's kinda old and sooo not my type. I would've much preferred a sex dream with Freddie Prince Jr. lol)

22 Weeks

This week I've noticed that every day things are starting to get harder as my ever-expanding belly is officially a bump. No longer do I just look bloated, I've officially entered the stage where people are confidant in assuming that I am pregnant. Our little jelly bean has been kicking up a storm! The kicks are getting stronger and more frequent and I can tell she is going to be a super active baby.

How Far Along: 22 weeks 4 days
How Long To Go: 17 weeks, 3 days
Weight Gain: 1.8lbs
Total Weight Gain: 3.8lbs
Weight: 123.8lbs
Belly Button: starting to stretch flat
Stretch Marks: none
Sleep: getting better sleep now that i am adjusting to sleeping on my sides
Best Moment This Week: deciding on our baby's name...but shhh! keeping it secret
Nausea: none
Craving: Oreos and milk
Miss Anything: bagels and lox
Movement: little girl is moving around all the time and kicking like crazy!
Gender: girl
Symptoms: some bad back pain this week and sciatic nerve pain. I've also been a lot more emotional this week...feeling like on the verge of tears for NO REASON. Gotta love pregnancy hormones :-/
Wedding Ring: still on
Looking Forward To: my niece and sister visiting this weekend
Maternity Clothes: officially loving my maternity clothes, even though I only have a few pieces I can mix and match them with my regular clothes. But the maternity shorts are incredible!
Fruit: Spaghetti squash (1.4lb, 8 inches)
Weird Dreams This Week: I had dreams about buying a dozen bagels from my old bagel shop in NY....and now I miss bagels....a lot.

22 Weeks Ultrasounds

So lots of stuff happened this week. We found out friends of ours are expecting!!! We are so thrilled because we figured none of our friends would get pregnant for another couple of years so now we will have babies six months apart!

Today we went back to the doctor to finish up our anatomy scan. Apparently Baby Girl Pontius is such a wiggle worm that the tech couldn't take all the necessary pictures the first time around. But, that meant that we got another chance to see our little jelly bean! She looks perfectly healthy and has a strong heart beat so the doctor is happy which means mom and dad are happy.

Since I neglected to post my ultrasound pictures from my 20 week scan I will post a few from that scan and this one from today...it's amazing how much development took place even between those two weeks!

isn't she adorable already?!

20 Week Bump Pic

Woohoo!!!!! half-way through pregnancy this week and it is a HUGE milestone! I've made it through the hardest part and now I am feeling better than ever. My energy is up and I am thrilled to know I've made it to the half-way mark.

How Far Along: 20 weeks 3 days
How Long To Go: 19 weeks, 4 days
Weight Gain: no weight gain yet...keep waiting on that sale to go up
Belly Button: took it out at week 18
Stretch Marks: none yet...using coconut oil morning and night and staying hydrated
Sleep: I've started sleeping on my sides and this has caused all sorts of problems. I toss and turn most nights because laying on my sides makes my hips and shoulders ache. I also keep waking up when I  find myself on my back. Apparently starting around 20 weeks it is no longer advised to sleep on your back or stomach so I guess I have to get used to this side sleeping thing. A lot of moms use a snoogle or a body pillow. My sister gave me hers but I don't find it very comfortable.
Best Moment This Week: Fourth of July! and having a returning client in town this week...It feels great to have repeat and happy customers
Nausea: no nausea thank goodness
Craving: fruit!!
Miss Anything: starting to miss good wine...and raw fish
Movement: little girl P is moving a ton! I feel her all day but she is the most active about 45 minutes after I eat and before bed.
Gender: bouncing baby girl!
Symptoms: back pain is making another appearance and sometimes I find my heart racing. A little moody too, nothing too bad but just blah some days.
Wedding Ring: still on
Looking Forward To: our 20 week anatomy scan on Wednesday. We will get full confirmation of the gender and get to see our little girl for a long ultrasound as they check her growth and development. Hopefully everything looks great
Maternity Clothes: Haven't purchased anything yet but I can tell those days are fast approaching. I've been using the BellyBand to keep my pants and shorts around, but I'm too big for certain tops and dresses
Fruit: Mango (6.5 in, 10oz)
Weird Dreams This Week: Had a dream last night about Lip and Fiona from the show Shameless...I also got my ass beat up in the dream so it was a weird and white-trashy night.

Week 18: Movement

This week marks a huge milestone in my pregnancy...I finally felt my little one move. Well, technically this happened while I was still at 17 weeks but since I hit 18 weeks I've been feeling her wiggle and kick every day. Mostly she does most of her moving at night when I'm laying down, or that is at least when I am paying the most attention and can feel her.

An even bigger deal is that Matt felt her for the first time on Sunday night. She was really active and I was enjoying feeling her little flutters and movements so I decided to see if Matt could feel anything, after all, I shouldn't get to have all the fun! After a few minutes of waiting he felt two big distinct kicks. He was so cute, he was smiling and so excited to finally be able to feel our little person inside of me.

It is really hard to describe what it feels like. It was weird for sure, the feeling of something moving around inside you is somewhat alien-like, but at the same time it was the coolest most incredible feeling I've ever felt. Up until now, it was hard to even believe that I was actually pregnant. You feel so detached to the process, like your body is going full steam ahead with this process without you even participating. Now that I can feel her I am extremely aware of the fact that there is a tiny person in my growing bump.

Speaking of bumps, it has been brought to my attention that I need to start documenting my growing form as I plump up and round out. So here are the first bump watch photos, and I will try to do them every week.

We're Having a Baby!

For the past few months it has been extremely difficult to blog. I could blame it on time management or being busy/lazy, but in reality I was holding back some big news and I couldn't spill the beans just yet...

Drum roll please........... WE'RE PREGNANT!!

Yep, all of our stuff works and we made a tiny little person that I am now growing inside me. I am almost 15 weeks which means we are out of the first trimester blues and into the "fun" stage of being pregnant. We've told out respective friends and family so everyone close to us knows already, and everyone is really excited.

We are due November 22nd, which means Thanksgiving this year is pretty much off the table as I may have just given birth, be about to pop or may actually be in labor! Either way, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and now it will be the same week (give or take the date) as my first child's' birthday. So now we get turkey AND cake!

I do have to address a previous post I wrote, pre-pregnancy and admit to what an enormous hypocrite I  am. A while back I wrote a post about fear and privacy, explaining how women only keep their pregnancies to themselves for fear of miscarriage. Although that is absolutely true I an now admit that I had no idea what I was talking about. I was completely unprepared for the fear that comes along with conceiving. From the day we found out until right around now, I almost didn't believe that this was all really happening and that something bad could still happen and I could lose the pregnancy. Now that I am in the second trimester, which is pretty much "out-of-the-woods" as far as the likelihood of miscarriage, I have begun to realize how much I enjoy keeping this whole experience quiet.

I still plan on blogging about my experiences. I've already gotten through the first trimester so there is plenty to talk about already, but I don't have the urge to share this news with the world. Facebook especially has become so public and stalker-esque that I don't really feel a need for my 2,000 "friends" to watch my belly growing from week to week. I will post those sorts of things here, because this is an outlet, but probably not facebook.

In the upcoming weeks I can't wait to share my experiences, frustrations and joys that come with being pregnant for the first time. I have really enjoyed reading other womens' blogs about the subject and hope to shed some light on my journey and the journey my husband and I are taking together. We are so blessed to be expecting a child and I am already greatly aware that it is a privileged denied to many. We are so excited to see what our future has in store.

XOXO
Lisa
